This faux silver Spanish eight reale coin (1 ½" diameter, or about 4cm) has been cut into pieces of eight — there's one half, a quarter, and two eighths. Cutting the coin was how they made change in those days and it's the origin of the term "pieces of eight". This is an excellent example of this. The quarter is shown here for size comparison.
