This is the first of three Pirates of the Caribbean movies starring Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush. The Curse of the Black Pearl is a supernatural adventure tale set during the 17th Century in the Caribbean Sea. For the roguish yet charming pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow, the crystalline waters of the Caribbean, like the high seas the world over, present a vast playground where adventure and mystery abound. But Jack's idyllic life capsizes after his wily shipmate Barbossa, leads the crew in mutiny and steals Jack's ship, the Black Pearl, setting himself up as captain.

After Barbossa and his pirates attack the town of Port Royal and kidnap the Governor's daughter, Elizabeth Swann. Elizabeth's childhood friend, Will Turner, joins forces with Jack to commandeer the fastest ship in the British fleet, the HMS Interceptor, in a gallant attempt to rescue her and recapture the Black Pearl. The duo and their crew are pursued by Elizabeth's fiancé, the debonair, ambitious Commodore Norrington, aboard the HMS Dauntless.

Unbeknownst to Will, Barbossa and the crew have stolen a chest of Aztec gold treasure coins and are suffering from an ancient curse that leaves them in a state between life and death, with the light of the moon revealing their true appearance as a crew of rotting skeletons. The curse can only be broken when the final missing Aztec coin is returned the chest, along with the blood of the person who stole it, or of a close relative.

This blockbuster movie generated an income of $1.2 billion in its first 19 months.
